Charting production and delivery milestones 18 Jan 2014 20:16 #9841

Is it possible to outline the production and delivery schedules for the Geek Pulse and update this on a regular basis such that contributors have a better understanding of the progress being made and when our products will arrive ?

I know roughly when the Geek Pulse X and LPS is to be delivered based on the information provided when I contributed to the Indiegogo campaign. However it would be beneficial to all of us if we would be regularly updated on the progress of your products.

Thanks. I am very much looking forward to receiving and enjoying these devices.

They have a milestone mark at the end of this month to give us some firm information and specs on the Pulse. I imagine at that point we'll get a more detailed timeline for the rest of the project. They've done a great job of staying close to their projected window for the Geek Out so I hope that will hold true for the Pulse as well.

I have not yet seen any information on status of production and distribution. Did I miss something?

Larry? Gavin?

I'd suspect that getting the Geek Out released is their main priority at the moment. Once that assembly line is running without a hitch, I'm sure they will turn their attention to the Pulse and we will be getting more regular updates then.

Hey, we just have a full day meeting and have a great conclusion of Geek Pulse.

For Geek Out, there are several following up items on production side. But in R&D perspective, it is there... :-)

Any good ideas for Geek Pulse? Posts are welcome!

Hi Larry,

Great to hear that things a moving along. It would be great to get insights in the conclusions of the Geek Pulse discussion and also how we are tracking for a June release. Given the challenges with the Geek Out production I would advice you and the team to focus on getting these two campaigns safely through the door before digging to deep into new products, addons etc...

And that's not only from a quality/performance perspective; my wallet is still suffering from financial anemia from the last campaign

I would say keep it simple.

A bar chart would be fine, I guess.
A dedicated milestone should be available for each of the different project phases (design, prototyping....Q/A, shipping).

I´d also like to see a split in the different sub-processes of each project phase. Since we´re still in design phase that would mean e. g. "3D modelling", "Front panel design"......
I guess you are more familiar which other project phases and sub-processes are needed ;-)

But I hope this gives you a idea.

I would be honored to be at your command to track those milestones ;-)

When I signed up initially the geek pulse and geek out package was to be shipped in March which was great for a planned birthday gift. I went to site to check out the delivery date and now it is posted as June.

I have managed quite a few projects in my life and this doesn't look good !

Do you have any mitigation plans ?

If a project has changing/increasing requirements, typically referred to as scope creep, and those are approved and change ordered into the project the end date is usually pushed out to accommodate. There were many suggestions and improvements made to the original design, by us the customers, and as a result we knew the date would push out and I believe was accepted by most. We knew what we were getting into and I honestly don't think it's a negative.

As Larry indicated in some earlier posts that if this product were produced and marketed via traditional methods the MSRP would be in the $5K range. We're truly getting a lot of value for our money. If I have to wait 2 to 3 months for that benefit I'm more than willing to do so.

Gery, I think that is reasonable but at the same time there is very little communication occuring at this stage. Yes, they're working on Pulse designs, wrapping up Geek Out stuff, but there is a lot of waiting. A bullet-point rundown of expected release dates, what is done vs. not done would be really helpful. I hope that once Geek Outs are heading out the door they will give us a proper rundown. I'm not trying to discredit how hard everyone must be working, but I'm not as interested in chatting with fellow backers - I want to hear from the company.

Yes.

Project timelines often slip. But when they do, clear communication becomes all the more important.

Hi Simon,

I understand and agree. My apologies if my post came across as argumentative. I was just trying to give some possible perspective as to why the date is sliding out by several months. The crowd funding process is new and there are a lot of variables to account for. Very often the creative process needs a great deal of flexibility. I suppose the plan should incorporate a great deal of lead and lag time because of it.

Hopefully, the PM, whomever he or she may be, will put together a communication plan to keep us better informed and to set expectations more appropriately.

Gavin posted some update type stuff here:
lhlabs.com/force/welcome/815-communication?start=6#12665

mainly:
Also from Wayne – Geek Out production schedule. We’ve not wanted to commit to a specific schedule other than to say we anticipate that we’ll begin shipping at the end of this month. I’m sorry that’s vague, but I can’t commit to a production schedule because there are too many variables. Let me give you an example: One of the reasons we decided to manufacture in the US was because we didn’t want to have to deal with the Chinese New Year interrupting production. As it turns out, more than 90% of the workers in the five different facilities (in three different states) we contract with to assemble the circuit boards are of Chinese ancestry. These workers refused to work during the Chinese New Year, directly stalling our production and delaying it by 4 weeks! But wait, why a four week delay when they were only celebrating for 10 days? It’s simple. Apple, Google, Cisco, Tesla, and about 40 other giants were delayed, too, and they get to go to the front of the line when there’s a delay.
From Bukem – Our priorities are wrong and Larry and Gavin don’t spend enough time talking to us. While I agree that our communication needs improvement for all the reasons I mention above, I have to dig my heels in on this one. Larry and I spend at least 7 hours a week each on this forum. Larry answers all kinds of technical questions and offers valuable insights to so many of you. I'd argue more than any other manufacturer. He has 911 posts on this forum! I spend all my time responding to private messages, plus I get to post a few things every week. As for our priorities being wrong, all I can say is we’re trying to add value to membership in the Force, and we’re trying to give you a voice on product development. I think those are the right priorities.
Also from Type35 – LH Labs is really good at marketing and bad at execution. Thank you so much for that comment. We’re doing our best to improve. At a previous company I worked at, we had 35 people in the company and 80% of the revenue Light Harmonic brought in last year with only six people. We didn’t expect this amount of growth overnight and were caught with our pants down. We’re doing our best to hire quality employees as quickly as possible, but expect it to take most of 2014. Hang in there!

Hi, Force

Juha just finished the 3D model of front panel. And I'm about the complete the key modules related stuff with engineering team.

So now we could start to draw a clear milestone and schedule.

Again, thanks for your patience.

Thanks for all your feedback.
Being an overseas investor, as am sure lots of Geek Force members are - it feels like am a part of history.
American dollar being strong (comparatively), we could only dream of owning quality audio equipment before.
Thanks to this endeavor it's brought that dream much closer.
Any design breakthrough only adds to enriching our experience.
So thank you !

Hi,

How is the progress of Geek Pulse? It will be delivered in time, or will we have some delay?
What is already decided, and what still need some decision, clarification and testing?

After all these months, we still have lack of information on a regular basis...
We know that you are working hard to deliver Geek Out, and finish Geek Pulse, but 5 minutes will not delay you...
This will also help to avoid all the not so good conversations, in some topics, about what LH team should or shouldn't do...

Keep on going... ;)

You are right. I should post a good progress last week.

So here is it.

* Geek Blue: Audio output quality is nice. But output voltage is not high enough, so we will keep fine tuning the output stage. Re-clock of digital output stage by our LH technology will be there by the end of this month.

* Geek Pulse: EP2 board will come in soon. And we will test another round of OpAmps in analog stage.
Now, my preference is
* Top 1: OP1612 + LME49710
* Top 2: Muse02 + LME49710
* Top 3: Muse01 + OP1612
And I found no matter what, JFET input combined with BJT input OpAmp seems always could deliver more balance sound. And we will keep going on in this journey on EP2 board since analog path has changed a little.

* Geek Pulse X/S: We found some issues with balance configuration. Still working on it. It's NOT easy to make it right.
Can you believe that, we still don't have quite enough PCB estate for balance version DAC. And I don't want to put components on the back side......

* Windows Driver and DFU testing went nicely. So now have a formal 'universal' Windows Driver for Geek Out/Pulse and Da Vinci.

* Geek LPS4/LPS: Will start heat testing and noise test again when the new PCB come in. That should be in 3rd week this month.

-- :silly: so many updates here ---

* LS JR./2G USB cable. ---> Tooling is on going. And we are making the final adjustment of marketing related technical specs.

Enjoy!

Since you're having issues with space on the PCB and since the Pulse is deeper than it is wider, would it be easier if the the Geek Stack was widened a bit to resolve the issue? Then you wouldn't have to have components on the back and the current design looks like it would stretch well.

But.. arrrgh... I don't want to appear unthankful here but... are there also some updates for the Air? Or is it not in your focus anymore? And what about the final Pulse design?
